Abstinence educator, La Verne Tolbert, Ph.D., is author of Keeping You & Your Kids Sexually Pure. She details her five-year tenure on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood, NYC when death certificates were required for all abortions. Her research on school-based clinics—abortion mills in public schools—explains why condom availability encourages kids to become sexually active. Written in everyday language, she urges pastors, parents, and teachers to teach teens why and how to save sex for marriage.

Tolbert is President of Teaching Like Jesus Ministries Inc., a para-church ministry equipping leaders in the local church. Her book, Teaching Like Jesus, is in 10th printing and is being used in churches, colleges, universities and seminaries throughout the United States.

Dr. Tolbert earned her Master of Arts and doctorate degrees from Biola University’s Graduate School of Theology. She is adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University and Chair of the Society for Children’s Spirituality: Christian Perspectives, a scholarly organization researching spiritual development in children. An advocate for adoption, her research focuses on the needs of children in the foster care system.

La Verne Tolbert is convinced that the faith community has the practical resources—the people—to solve the adoption crisis in the United States. She is President/CEO of Teaching Like Jesus Ministries, Inc., a parachurch ministry dedicated to equipping leaders in the local church and Director of the Society for Children's Spirituality: Christian Perspectives.

Since 1989, Dr. Tolbert has been an advocate to "help churches help children" promoting active church involvement in adoption and foster care. In its infancy stage, Tolbert partnered with One Church One Child and subsequently held Adoption Sundays at two mega-churches in Los Angeles.

In recognition of her efforts to place teenagers into permanent families, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Supervisor, Second District of the City of Los Angeles awarded Dr. Tolbert a Commendation for “promoting positive permanency for older youth in the foster care system.” The award, in recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month (November 2010) was presented by Dr. Edwina Lewis during Open Your Heart Sunday, an adoption event held at Crenshaw Christian Center.
