MIldred Jefferson Life Award

Arnold Culbreath, Fred Luter, Dean Nelson The Mildred Jefferson Leader for Life Award is the highest honor given by the National Black Prolife Coalition in recognition of those whose work for life is exemplary. The award recognizes leadership and excellence in the fight for life.

Dr. Fred Luter, the first Black President of the Southern Baptist Convention, is the National Black Pro-Life Coalition's first "Mildred Jefferson Leader for Life Award" recipient. At the 2014 Southern Baptist Convention's annual National African American Fellowship banquet, National Black Pro-Life Coalition Core members Arnold Culbreath and Dean Nelson honored Dr. Fred Luter for his consistent public stand for life.

On Thursday, May 22nd, 2013, Dr. Fred Luter joined former Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson, Archbishop Gregory Aymond, Archbishop of New Orleans and Pastor Antoine Barriere of Household of Faith with hundreds of Pro-Life advocates for a rally to oppose a new Planned Parenthood regional abortion center on Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans where he serves as Senior Pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church.

The Nola Needs Peace Coalition, a growing group of churches and community organizations committed to building a peaceful New Orleans without abortion, sponsored the event and noted:

"From legislative testimony and their own material, Planned Parenthood has indicated they will perform abortions for the first time in Louisiana at the Claiborne Avenue facility. Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion business in the U.S., performed 333,964 abortions in 2011."

Dr. Fred Luter's Message:

"Growing up in New Orleans, I've seen how much violence hurts our community. I also know the struggles our citizens have to access genuine and affordable health care. While Planned Parenthood claims to be a genuine health care option for women, what many people don't know is that Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest abortion business. By increasing the number of abortions in New Orleans, Planned Parenthood will damage the lives of the women, families, and unborn babies of our city."

Not only did Dr. Fred Luter stand boldly and courageously in the face of Planned Parenthood, but he did this while serving as the Senior Pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church and President of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Southern Baptist Convention is the world's largest Baptist denomination and the largest Protestant body in the United States, with nearly sixteen (16) million members as of 2012.

Everyone, please join the National Black Pro-Life Coalition in congratulating Dr. Fred Luter, the first recipient of the Mildred Jefferson Leader for Life Award.
